The River Queen made its maiden voyage on Ascarate Lake early today after it was christened with a bottle of soda by County Commissioner Richard Telles.
The new $12,000 boat was built here by Vista Construction Co. and is owned by Louis Maldonado, Rudolfo Vaca and Margaret Hildago. It weights 7000 pounds and is powered by a 75 h.p. marine engine.
The boat is 3 feet long, 11 feet wide, and 12 feet high. It can carry 50 adults or 70 children, and travel at a speed of three to four knots, or five miles per hour.
County Judge Glenn Woodard, Alderman Hector Bencomo, Mr. Maldonado and Mr. Vaca and two of the crew members were also on hand to make the 25 minute trip around the lake.
The River Queen will make continuous trips, starting today, carrying passengers. Rates are 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for children. It will operate each evening from 6 to 10 p.m. and all day Saturday and Sundays.
The skipper of the craft is Roger Maldonado with Hector Cordova and Eduardo Vallejo as crewmen. They wear red and white candy striped "T" shirts and white pants.”
