Cleo P. Molthan, who became a devotee of the bow and arrow sport only four months ago, yesterday was crowned champion of the El Paso Archery Club as he came through with a stirring victory in the men’s division of the club’s first annual tournament at Washington Park.
With a large number of spectators, including Ernest Thompson Seton, nationally known writer and naturalist, looking on, Molthan nosed out such veteran archers as Harry L. Zollars and A.J. Slogeris in the championship round and then went on to also annex the flight title. Without the use of regular flight equipment, Molthan’s best effort in the flight meet carried 227 yards.
Shooting off a four-way tie in the men’s wand event, A.J. Slogeris placed first with Harry L. Zollars second. Zollars captured the high individual score in a two-team match of which he participated with Slogeris, Molthan, Jeff Parham, Gus Sundquist, Dr. R.H. Greer, C.R. Harris and Dr. Harry Leigh.
Miss Norma Kazmer, former California titlist, annexed the women’s championship, winning out over Mrs. H.L. Zollars and Mrs. A.J. Slogeris.
In the tyro shoot, held for archers who had never participated in tourneys before, Mr. And Mrs. Molthan captured the titles in their respective divisions.
Mrs. Zollars won the woman’s flight event, with her best shot carrying 200 yards. This mark lacked but a few feet of equaling the Texas state record for women.
After tying in the women’s wand shoot, Miss Kazmer defeated Mrs. Zollars for the title.
Millard Brown, Jr. walked off with all but one event in the boy’s division, taking the club championship, scout and tyro. Billy Taylor, a young archer of two weeks standing, was runner-up in each of the events. Clarence Walker took the flight contest with a shot of 152 yards.
Dorothy Walker easily won the girl’s title and also came through with victories in the flight and tyro division.
