El Pasoans today should be on the lookout to avoid speeding through school zones or otherwise violating the new city ordinance controlling traffic through school zones.
Sergt. J.W. Fitzgerald last night warned that old rubber “slow” signs have been supplanted with upright metal poles supporting a round disc which bears the words, “School in Session, 10 Miles Per Hour.”
The new signs will be up only during school hours, Sergt. Fitzgerald said, and will be removed from the center of the street when school is not in session. When the signs are removed, the usual city speed limit will apply.
Further, no motorist may pass another in a school zone. Only one lane of traffic will be allowed each way.
In addition to the regular school patrol, motorcycle officers will be on duty throughout the city to see that the new ordinance is not violated at the expense of school children.
“We are hoping that El Paso motorists will co-operate with us this year in an effort to go through a school year without a single casualty,” Sergt. Fitzgerald said.
