Has an owl a gizzard?
That is what some small boys wanted to know when the county commissioners considered offering a $1 reward for every owl gizzard delivered at the courthouse.
Farmers in the lower valley had complained about losing their chickens and state that if something was not done to put an end to the depredations there would soon be no chickens left in the valley. A number blamed the owls and thought the commissioners should offer a bounty. One of the commissioners suggested that $1 be paid for an owl’s gizzard, believing this would be an incentive for persons to get out and commit a wholesome slaughter of the birds. Another commissioner stated he did not believe owls had any gizzard. The commissioners are now wondering who would be the proper person to consult about the anatomy of an owl.
