El Paso detectives have found that airplanes can be of use in more ways than one and were recommending last night that Chief L.T. Robey put his flying ability into service.
Yesterday afternoon, while the chief’s son, Clarence, of the R. & E. Airways, Inc. was circling the city in his plane, he spotted an automobile near the municipal golf course.
Swooping low over the car, young Robey saw that it had been abandoned. He circled the car again and saw that the tires and one of the seats had been removed from the machine.
Flying back to the municipal airport, young Robey called police headquarters and notified them of the location and condition of the car.
Officers found a large and expensive automobile, reported stolen a few days ago from Samuel Rowan, 26 East Yandell boulevard. The car had been stripped.
Detectives last night said that since the chief of police holds a pilot’s license, he should purchase a plane for the department and devote a part of his time to looking for stolen automobiles.
Yesterday’s example, they pointed out, is ample evidence that a plane may be used to a good advantage in searching for stolen automobiles in the sandhills where it is almost impossible for automobiles to go on scouting tours.
