No surprises in the contract UTEP plans to give new Football Coach Sean Kugler. It's still one of the lowest in NCAA Division I-A, basically $280,000 a year from Jan. 1, 2013, to Aug. 31, 2018, plus incentives.
UTEP is saying, as it has to from its financial position, that Kugler must win a lot of games before the school can afford to pay more.
Between the lines: If Kugler wins a lot of games he won't be here; he'll be off to real money. Then UTEP can get another coach it can afford to pay ... well, maybe a tad better because of increased ticket revenue.
If Kugler gets UTEP to winning regularly, which it hasn't done in more than 4 decades, then it doesn't matter what UTEP pays him. He'll be off to the next, best coaching vacancy. Let's be realistic, UTEP isn't the place that coaches set their sights on.
If UTEP can only afford $280K, then that's what it has to pay out. Simple as that. If the coach has some success and brings in more fans (and their dollars) then he'll get compensated for that success.

It's a sad day when the President of the USA makes more money than a college football coach.
What's the deal with UTEP alumni - why don't they or a booster club subsidize the coaching salary, similar to what's done at other universities? That way they'd be able to afford a reputable coach, and the athletic department would be held to perform at a competitive level. They'd also make that clown Bob Stull accountable - Stull is stealing money and has underperformed.
Hasn't UTEP gaduated any captains of industry that leverage their wealth to get their way (i.e. T. Boone Pickens - OSU, Paul Bryant, Jr. at Alabama, Bobby Lower - Auburn, etc.)?
