It doesn't appear UTEP Basketball Coach Tim Floyd has been in the mix to replace Trent Johnson as LSU's coach.
Most think the school is going after other big names, including Minnesota's Tubby Smith, Sacramento Kings assistant Reggie Theus and Harvard's Tommy Amaker.
It's not dumb to add Floyd to that mix. He's from the Deep South (Mississippi), was popular as coach at the University of New Orleans early in his career, and has coached the NBA's New Orleans Hornets.
But these are the type of situations that change by the hour.
Real deep insight there, Joe. Good to see that hard hitting journalism is still alive in El Paso.

Do you want him to be a candidate Joe?

Theus isn't an assistant with the Kings. You need to get your facts straight.

LSU already hired their new coach. North Texas head coach Johnny Jones got the job Friday afternoon. I'm give you the benefit of the doubt this piece was written before that announcement. Simply put, Coach Floyd isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Kudos to Joe for at least addressing the issue. The rumor was out there. Bill Kniight is supposedly the beat writer for UTEP hoops yet he reports absolutely nothing at all. We have had multiple recruits visit during this late signing period. Have we seen anything in the Times? No. There is so much information on recruiting out there that there is no excuse not have something to report. Once agin, Thank you Joe for at least covering UTEP basketball.

What next Joe, Col. Custard in the observatory.

I'm with Lu. Bill Knight is a nothing UTEP basketball beat writer. At least he's predictable. He's last in line with the news every time. Seems like that new sports editor they hired hasn't done a thing to get the Times sports staff on top of fact-checking or solid, hard-hitting beat reporting. KROD, UTEP's rivals site, Miner Rush, Kyote's Den, KVIA, KTSM, then maybe the Times in seventh place. They ought to shake up the assignments on that sports staff and get some fresh eyes on one of the most important beats in El Paso.

At least Joe gets people commenting. The other reporters do the UTEP talking head thing, giving us wine and roses all the time.
Personally, I like a little controversy.

Floyd has a year before he is gone elsewhere. All the miner fans will complain and say if you do not tow the UTEP line you are not a "real" miner fan. Natalicio and stull will continue to say they support miner sports, but they cannot justify paying a good coach. Joe will report how good the next coach is and how good the program is to get readership and ad rates up, then the whole cycle will start all over again.

A losing record isn't gonna' get much in the way of offers for any coach. Floyd is a good coach who will need a few years more to get the team to a place where he will be in play again for open coaching gigs.
After another 4 years, do you think he'll want to leave?
