Don’t make too much out of tonight’s UTEP basketball opponent having gone to the NCAA Tournament last season.
UT San Antonio, after all, plays in the Southland Conference.
Yes, UTEP is really young; it’s only senior, Gabe McCulley, is out injured. But we’re still talking college basketball caste system here.
UTSA got into the NCAA Tournament by winning its conference, then losing by 29 points to Ohio State in the tournament.
UTEP plays in the fairly good Conference USA (Memphis, Tulsa, Houston ...)
Some Southland Conference members: Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston, UT Arlington, Nicholls ...
UTSA's leading scorer from last year is gone. It does have two double-digit scorers returning, 6-5 junior Melvin Johnson (14.9) and 6-8 sophoore Jerome Hill (13.4)
I’m betting UTEP soph John Bohannon will negate Hill under the hoop.
Young team or not, UTEP should win its home opener.
Think about this Joe. Our team that won 25 games and included stars like Randy Culpepper, Julyan Stone, and Jeremy Williams might have lost to Ohio St by 20 points. So don't be so surprised that this "lowly" Southland Conference team lost by 29. More than that, we have 10 new faces, and they return 4 of 5 starters. If you saw the first exhibition, experience won. This game tonight will be anything but easy. All that said, we should at least have a chance. But, we need a good crowd to back us up. Home court advantage can make a big difference.

I excelled as an athlete and thought I finally arrived and conquered my demons. Because the ultimate goal for me, and I think the ultimate goal for any athlete.
