Oh come on, already! UTEP got off the bus-ride to Socorro, N.M. Saturday and by Sunday's practice its three running backs are held out of practice with minor injuries.
What happened? There hadn't been any contact drills yet. But the top three had to stand around: Joe Banyard, the projected workhorse; Vernon Frazier, the speed; and Leilyon Myers, the barger when the teams needs two or three yards for a first down.
The first official team meeting had been dinner in the Durham Center. Did they all bust a gut when Coach Mike Price stood up and told a good joke?
Probably they just tweaked a this or dinged a that during summer workouts.
However, does it not seem like UTEP has too many injuries over the past years? Star runner Donald Buckram virtually all of last year, although he was usually listed as the proverbial "day to day."
My long-held theory: Today's athletes build themselves into such he-men that their frames can't withstand all their muscle strength. There are guys pulling things and ripping things that never pulled or ripped before.
The biggest example may be in baseball, not football. Slugger swings, misses and rips his side right off his ribs. It's the DL for Slugger.
Do you think guys in the 1980s ever pulled a buttock muscle.
Then came year-round conditioning drills and fancy weight rooms — and three, count 'em, THREE of UTEP's only THREE veteran runners already hurt before the first block or tackle.
