If 6-foot-10 center Hooper Vint signs a basketball agreement with UTEP Friday, there will be 14 players on next year's roster.
That's one too many. The NCAA limit is 13 scholarships.
So who's gone? Or not coming after all?
There are three returnees and 10 others who are either on campus, or say they are going to enroll.
Senior-to-be Gabe McCulley ( 6-foot-7) will be back. I hope sophomore-to-be, 6-10 "Sassy John" Bohannon is back. He shows promise, if he'd shaddup and listen. Soph-to-be guard Michael Perez? Recall he and Bohannon missed a game late in the season due to "academics." And Perez didn't play much late in the season after getting rave reviews early.
As is the case at most schools, the off-season sees flunk outs, kicked offs and guys who transfer.
Bet there will be more re-arranging of the roster heading into fall. Remember, Coach Tim Floyd is well known, notoriously known, for over recruiting and then discarding like it was draw poker.
Keep in mind, coaches don't like to, and don't have to, talk much about individual players who are not yet officially enrolled in school. In fact, there are some things the NCAA says coaches can't talk about.
Here's my gut feeling on who's the first(s) to not be back.
1. One of the juco forward transfers
2. Perez
3. Bohannon
Hope Julian Washburn, the 6-7 4-star recruit who sat out last season (academics) is back. He's the top recruit so far.
Final, final note: Had Hooper Vint been signing with the football team today, would his name be Gridder Vint?
If Tim Floyd were to sit tight with the players we have coming back and the verbal commitments he has for next year, he would be a fool. Players from every school across the nation tranfer, quit, get in trouble, flunk out... it is not just a UTEP thing and Floyd is doing the program a favor by being prepared.
Hooper Vint is the type of player that Floyd can mold into more than a space eater. He can be a very good post player under Floyd/Foster supervision. He is no guarantee. Nobody is in college basketball. That is why it is a good thing that Floyd handles his roster the way he does. Notorious? No. Smart? Yes.

No worries. Someone or someones will be gone making plenty of room. Always happens.

Plus not all players listed are scholarship players. That's why they're called "walk-on's." They try out and make the team, but are most valuable in practice. Because they're not on a scholarship, they can go whenever they want to or get cut for whatever reason. Most teams have 14-15 players on their rosters, but only 13 can be on scholarship.

Tim Floyd may not necessarily need to get rid of a player. if you think about it, gabe is going to be attending graduate school so its no stretch to say that they will try to work a non basketball scholarship for him.

Informative post regarding reorganizing the list in the section fall. Remember, Coach Tim Floyd familiar, well known for hiring and then was cast as Draw Poker.
