The unique Basketball in the Barrio summer program gets some good mention in a new documentary that will premier in El Paso Wednesday evening.
Many know that former Utepians Rus Bradburd and Steve Yellen run a summer program for kids in the Segundo Barrio. Yellen was a player and Bradburd an assistant coach at UTEP.
Their program gets some props in Doug Harris's film, "Basketball in the Barrio: El Paso's History & Culture. It's to premier in the Philantrophy Theatre, which is inside the historical Plaza Theatre in Downtown.
It's a one-hour film taking viewers through El Paso history, starting in the early 1900s. One focus is on old Bowie High's sports teams. Yellen and Bradburd got their inspiration for their yearly summer program from their deceased friend, El Paso Sports Hall of Famer Rocky Galarza, a famous barrio sports star. The filming is situated in the Armijo Recreation Center.
There'll be some Don Haskins and the Texas Western Miners, of course.
Proceeds from ticket sales go to the 2008 Basketball in the Barrio Camp. This year it's June 13-15. Tickets are available at the box office or at Ticketmaster.
