Mike Price situation
Here's assuaging some fans' fears that UTEP Football Coach Mike Price won't like it here anymore and head back to the big-time.
Nobody will come calling for Price. In my opinion, he's perhaps the best UTEP football coach ever, but it's his fourth year now and he hasn't turned the program around. He has, though, apparently kept it from hitting the old 2-9 doldrums of so many coaches in the recent past.
To get from UTEP to the TV leagues, you've got to pull a Billy Gillispie.
Gillispie's UTEP basketball team got real good real fast. He then made the move to Texas A&M, where getting good real fast landed him at the apex of college basketball, Kentucky.
It's much more difficult to turn football around. You can do it with two or three new players in basketball. In football you need two or three good recruiting seasons — in a row.
Price hasn't done that. And although he's been to the big-time bowls while at Washington State, he's never had more than two winning seasons in a row.
Stop worrying that Price will be lured away.
i dont think its fear of him leaving as much as it is fans like monchis wanting him fired.
monchis i'll take you on. if you utep loses houston and rice i'll sing your praises and then i'll stop blogging till basketball season, but if utep wins you shut your lip and find another place to piss people off. you man enough?

I too think Price won't leave. Outside of El Paso, he still carries a lot of baggage and he's a little old.
However, Washington State has struggled the past few years under Bill Doba and Price is still beloved in the North West.
What if WSU fires Doba and calls Price?
For him to leave, it's got to be the right situation.

Monchis much like your real life--nobody on the net likes you either. You claim to be a Miner fan but have managed to alienate yourself amongst Miner and Aggie fans on this blog. You must be a UNM Hobo because only they are hated by both of us.
Alas, I do feel good that you are making progress these days because up until today you were unable to post in one coherent paragraph. Tough completing whole paragraphs at GoldDigger practice? While I had my fair share of bad games I'll suffice to say I was bad enough to start two of my four years and the last UTEP team to beat a Top 25 team (1997 BYU). Oh, I was third in tackles that game. Before they tore down the goalposts and threw them over the stadium in 2000, they did it after that game.
Monchis, like your awful Miss Cleo predictions your brain or brawn couldn't hold my proverbial jockstrap. You were the type my teammates made do their work while they were with your girlfriend in the dorms. Even your screen name is pathetic because Monchis is a Mexican sewing company so while you couldn't hold my jockstrap at least you could make me one. XL please. Don't you just love bye week? Oh wait Monchis thought that meant something entirely different...

I understand Joe tries to be provocative with his opinions, but his total lack of knowledge concerning the recruiting process is obvious. There are only a select number of schools who can recruit year in and year out with hopes of competing for a national championship. USC, Oklahoma, Texas, Notre Dame, Michigan, Florida...the rest are hoping to recruit well enough to make it to a BCS bowl. Texas A & M,
Michigan St., Arizona, Oregon...Other schools such as Boise St., BYU, Baylor, Rutgers, Ole Miss, and UTEP (yes UTEP) occasionally steal recruits from the big schools. The rest of the time is spent fighting over recruits with these other 3rd tier programs. Developing a product that is a consistent winner takes many years. To act as if Mike Price has not turned things around is insulting to him and the players who have changed the face of UTEP football. I'd say that going from 1.5 wins a year to 7 is turning it around. Give UTEP time to develop name recognition and a bit more winning history and you will see us consistently making BCS runs. At least while the BCS is still in existence.

I remember just me a few others in the Sun Bowl on Saturday nights. UTEP lost but we had a lot of fun. Once in a while we would beat a good team like BYU or Arizona, both St. and U. and that would be the whole season for us. Many of you out there just don't understand loyalty. You've never been taught, not your fault. So when I see 35000 people in the stands I think it is awesome. When I see 5 wins in a season I think it's pretty good. When I see 8 wins in a season and a bowl I think I died and moved to the big city. It's all a matter of perspective.

All I know is we should the same amount of fans that we had last game regardless of losing becausee our next game will decide who will stay atop the west division...
That last game hurt and all i am feeling is redemption and to come away with a victory... Like jeremy jones said" They stuck their daggers in our hearts but were going to bounce back."

I too have sat in a near empty stadium while the Miners got thrashed by just about everyone. I looked forward to playing Lamar or Fort Hayes St. just so we could have a chance to win. We have come a long way and as a season ticket holder and lifelong fan, I soak it all in. I like to feel like I was part of the turnaround. I'm not about to abandon ship. I'll be in the stands with or without Mike Price.

Here's the thing, A&M, Nebraska, Michigan, Arkansas, and Syracuse are all going to be looking for new coaches. I don't see Price going to any of those schools (they are too "elite" right now for him). However, these vacancies will create a windfall of openings around the country. Nebraska, A&M, and Michigan can essentially get whoever they want. If they don't hire in house, which doesn't look likely at this point, the domino's will start falling from the very top.
Here is where Mike Price has the best shot at ending up: The Pac 10. Arizona UCLA, and Washington State, could all be potentially looking for new head coaches. If these positions open up, you have to assume that Price's past success, West Coast and AZ recruiting prowess (with a new territory in Texas?), would make him a very attractive candidate.
Price has been great for UTEP, and has taken them as far as they can go, but nobody thought he would be here this long, especially him.

correction: Didn't mean to call Syracuse elite, but Price would never end up on the East Coast. That job is attractive to a lot of people though and could play into the chaos that is sure to happen in college football's coaching circle this year.

Tim Huntley has been wanting to head back to the Rose bowl and almost left for Michigan St. a couple years ago.

It was only a matter of time before Monchis started gushing the Spanish curse words. I could see it coming from a mile away. Your machismo was challenged and you needed to step up to the plate with some curse words to get it back. It worked, because now I totally do not see you as a gold digger. Monchis could have been the same person yelling Spanish curse words at my 2-year-old niece while she was eating Cotton Candy during the Aggie-Miner game.
Not to fear, Gabe G is back to help share the load of ignorance. He must have seen your second grade arguments and felt that those were reminiscent of his arguments a couple months ago. Monchis and Gabe G appear to be brothers separated at birth and were probably tired of allowing the reasonable Miner fans to control this Blog.
All that aside, it is bush league to knock a player that you used to cheer for. Oh wait, you probably didn't become Miner fans until 4 years ago, when everybody decided to be Miner fans. Neither Gabe G nor Monchis could even get close to a D-1 playing field, yet, they are both man enough to criticize somebody who did play. I take the first part of that last comment back, Monchis is the lead gold digger and is routinely on the field.
Gabe and Monchis are frustrated JV athletes who feel like they need to get all macho with reasonable debators. When you start throwing out curse words and this "Monchis was with your girl" talk, you lose all credibility and look like idiots.

Although I did play college ball. I was not JAT jockstrap.
He played in the late 90's for Utep.
I played in the early/mid 90's for NMSU.
Don't even start w/ remedial course insults and that I was in the 10 year plan.
I have an EE degree from one of the top Engineering schools in the country and did it in 3.5 years.
Boy, I'm glad I didn't play for Utep. Having to represent the school w/ fan's like you and Gabe? I'd much rather transffer to Sul Ross.
I'm sure some of the current Utep player have read your comments.
I can only imagine what they are thinking. Pretty sad.

Nonetheless you choose your battles wisely because while Mumme and I get a chuckle out of your arguments--you shy away from the most intelligent people SM and austin.
You don't have to like me Monchis the seamstress but at least respect my football opinion. Not because I once played for UTEP but because I sometimes know what I'm talking about. If I want to know the proper way to ask "Do you want fries with that?" or how to sew buttons on a GoldDigger blouse I'll come ask you.
