UCF served notice Wednesday night, notice that this Conference USA race is not a slam dunk for Memphis.
The Knights edged Memphis 68-67, handing the Tigers their first C-USA loss.
Marshall leads the pack at 4-0, followed by UCF at 4-1, Southern Miss and Memphis, each at 3-1.
Marshall dropped a non-conference game at West Virginia Wednesday — which never helps the league. But this race should be fun. Those four teams will battle all the way. Memphis edged Southern Miss 60-58 in Memphis but still must go to Hattiesburg on Feb. 1. The Tigers go to Marshall Feb. 25 and play UCF at home Feb. 28.
While it appears to be a four team race, there are a number of teams that can play spoiler. Tulsa and UTEP are 3-2. Rice and SMU are 2-2. All four of those teams are dangerous on their home court.
And do not forget UAB. The Blazers won their first conference game Wednesday night, edging Rice 61-60 in overtime in Houston. UAB is 1-3, but lost by two to Marshall, by three to Memphis and by four at Southern Miss. No one will be eager to play the Blazers — especially in Birmingham.
I wonder how much of Marshall's record was contributed to by the team's acting abilities taught by their coach (as evidenced by his actions in the Marshall vs. UCF game last week).

So UTEP schedule really sets up for next year with Marshall, UCF, UAB, and Memphis at home. Also Oregon and UNLV at home. UTEP will be on the road for Colorado St and Southern Miss. Floyd has said that he is trying to get teams such as Arizona and/or Kentucky to do home and home if they dare. Houston has some big time recruits coming in next year as well. Get your season tickets because after next year they probably won't be available!
