The El Paso area is full of former UTEP basketball players who have become coaches. But a couple of young ones are doing well.
Chris Craig, who played at UTEP in 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 for Billy Gillispie, is the 30-year-old head coach at Midland College.
Craig, who was part of Gillispie's teams that tied for the biggest turnaround in NCAA history, is a young veteran. He was the head coach at College of Eastern Utah for three seasons, going 69-32 and taking his 2010 team to third place in the NJCAA national tournament, losing to eventual champion Howard College in the semifinals.
He then served as an assistant at the University of Northern Colorado last year, helping that team to a conference championship and an NCAA Tournament berth.
Craig was hired at Midland College in June and had only two players returning. The Chaparrals are currently 6-2 and ranked 18th in the nation in the latest NJCAA poll.
Craig's teammate at UTEP, Omar Duran, is the head coach at Cathedral High. He has that program going well. The Irish are 9-1 now after defeating Midland Lee Tuesday night at Midland College's Chaparral Center.
