The El Paso Times reported earlier today that Myron Strong has been dismissed from the UTEP basketball team.
The dismissal was for unspecified policy violations, and "UTEP Associate Athletic Director for Media Relations Jeff Darby said the school would offer no further comment on Strong's dismissal."
But someone who is saying more is Myron Strong. Today on Facebook, he had this to say about his departure:
Yeah I'm not at utep anymore I know a lot of ppl wondering y, but the big question really should be how did tim floyd even get the job there? Wasn't he just under investigation at USC? Well I'm hearing that he had a fake charity event to pay former player OJ Mayo $100,000 to play for him. How did the ncaa let that slide? I'm just saying ...
In the comments following his post, Strong goes on to say that he misses El Paso and can't wait to visit again soon.
UPDATE: Over on Twitter, Dan Wolken of Memphis says:
Spoke with Floyd, who went right back at Strong, said he was dismissed due to drug policy violation, noted his fourth school in 4 years.
Wow.

I would be slapping myron strong with a liable and slander suit...he's going to regret typing those words, plus what future coach is going to want him on their team after reading his FB wall...
He committed career suicide by Facebook

Geez Myron, you had to know that the crap that barbee might of tolerated would not be allowed under a seasoned veteran coach like Tim Floyd.

Drugs, drugs, drugs! Shame on this guy! His track record speaks for itself. Four schools in four years. Scores of people are being murdered in Mexico because America is the biggest consumer of illegal drugs. This myron should be ashamed of himself he is just acting like a spoiled punk who finally got discovered and can no longer get away with his unethical acts.

Strong's lies just prove UTEP made the right decision. What a scum bag. Good for Floyd for getting rid of trash.

doesn't surprise me, strong looked as though he was blazed on numerous occassions, i guess he probably was

If it is true that Floyd made the comments about drug policy violations, then-------------he and UTEP may have considerable liability.
A case of possible slander may be brought against UTEP and Floyd!!
What ever the reason for dismissal it shoud have been labeled as either athletic or team policy violations.
Floyd if he made those comments abouts drugs should not have done so.

John C,
I don't often agree with you, but I think you are correct about UTEP's liability in this issue, though I don't believe it's slander if the young man was indeed dismissed for a drug-related issue. The liability, I think, is this release of information is a violation of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Unless the athlete or his parents gave permission for UTEP to release this kind of information about his dismissal, then this is where there may be a problem for UTEP and for the coach. You are correct when you wrote that Coach Floyd should not have commented about drug use.

The defense to libel, slander and defamation is truth. If it is true Floyd nor UTEP have any worries. The truth is the truth and can be freely spoken of as such.

People are so quick to judge the next person that you know nothing about which is really the problem at hand. Floyd passed judgement on Strong before he knew him.Strong is a good kid and four schools an four years says nothing. It shows how these coaches sell these players a dream and then snatch it all away once they leave and get offered something better.Strong is still a growing young man who may let his words slip and he may later regret them but on the other hand Floyd is a full grown adult that shoukd exemplify wisdom as an adult and uphold a certain standard as a coach. There was no reason drugs should have came out into the media because if Strong lays everything out it could be verY ugly for UTEP.

Drugs? I really don't believe it had anything to do with drugs. If so myron should have been kicked off the team. Have they had a drug test or anything lately because from the looks of it, this happen some time ago so why is it an issue now? I personally feel that myron is still a young man and has a lot of life ahead of him. And clearly I think Utep and Floyd slandered myron's name! Things could get worse but I'm praying it dows down. Go Miners

Floyd did what he had to do, what any good coach would do. This is not passing judgement on Strong, it is enforcing university policy which applies to all.
Posted by: old el pasoan | August 13, 2010 at 05:52 AM
Sue him for liable, huh? Gotta love El Paso.

I had to think that it was Dan Wolken who quoted Tim Floyd in a telephone interview about Stong violating drug policy. The reason for his dismissal from UTEP basketball program.
Dan Wolken is no fan of Floyd or UTEP and he may be trying to stir the pot to create more problems for UTEP and especially Floyd.
We at UTEP should be ready for sports writers around the country taking dirty and cheap shots at Floyd. He is well known and recognized as a winner at the collegiate level.
I still support Floyd in spite of the allegations that he mentioned Strong associated with drugs. He is the coach---he should put the team through drug testing. It is a social delema in the US and has no place in the workplace or on the court at a well respected university.
However, if Floyd did mentioned drug use----he should not have done so.

------------------------------
So the El Paso Police or some other law enforcement agency ascertained there was criminal activity? If so, it is not the responsibility of the coach to make any announcement as such, if in fact, he did. It certainly isn't appropriate that the information was made public as it was.
I stand by original post; I believe the risk is a violation of FERPA.

Strong Responds to drug claims - says that a majority of the team failed.

This is a terrible situation for UTEP no matter how you look at it. It really doesn't matter how we fans look at Strong's dismissal. I only wonder how the team is taking it. If the team believes Myron was unfairly treated, then Floyd may have just lost a chance at a successful year with this group of talented veterans.
Posted by: Lorenzo | August 13, 2010 at 10:15 AM
well if you are going to enforce University policies on one student they should be enforced on all of them. But life is not always fair so Myron should hold his head up and know that there will be better days. You reap what you sow..UTEP..
Posted by: TheTruthIs | August 13, 2010 at 10:50 AM
Old El Pasoan is right, bill is wrong. Police records at UTEP are not protected by FERPA. El Paso Times can easily get a hold of any report with Myron in it.

I know Tim Floyd, have for 30 years. He is a good man, a good coach and is not a liar. Strong has already established himself as a liar and a person without character. I don't care what he says now. He is angry and seeks revenge. Floyd and UTEP did the right thing. The other players know it and will move on. Time to put this to bed and move on, all.

My earlier comment was that Dan Wolken in his article attached makes mention of Floyd saying that Strong was dismissed due to drugs violations. See attached link:
http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2010/aug/12/former-hamilton-high-star-dismissed-utep-rips-coac/
I have a feeling that Floyd has learned not to make any conversation with Wolken as it will probably be taken out of context. Wolken is definatly not a fan of Floyd or UTEP.
I have to support Floyd in his effrot to establish discipline in the basketball program. He is accomplishing this in his own way.
Disciplnes was obviously missing under Barbie. In fact Strong was a "Barbie Doll."

no Derrick Caracter or Arnett Molturie or Myron Strong or Tony Barbee... utep will be no where good as they were last year, half the people commenting probably use drugs. so stop hating on Myron. Coach Floyd wont take this team anywhere.. unless Randy C and Julian Stone do it themselves..

this comment is straight bullshyt>>>>>I know Tim Floyd, have for 30 years. He is a good man, a good coach and is not a liar.
