New Mexico State athletic director, Dr. McKinley Boston, was at the Sonic Drive-In in Anthony, NM, to announce Sonic's sponsorship of the Battle of I-10. Needless to say, he's surprised and upset with the decision by Fresno State and the University of Nevada to bolt the Western Athletic Conference for the Mountain West
Boston details how, just yesterday afternoon, he took an emotional tumble from a huge high expecting BYU to bolt the MWC to join the WAC in all sports but football to the lowest of lows after hearing about the Bulldogs and Wolfpack.
By extension, Boston implied he thought Fresno's and Nevada's leadership was unethical after agreeing just this last Monday to a $5 million buyout if they decided to leave the conference.
Nevada didn't sign the deal, but had agreed to sign it. Fresno State signed it. Both will be pressured, if not sued, by the WAC to honor the agreement.
It puts UTEP's former conference in an impossible situation. The most far-flung schools remain, from Hawaii to Idaho to Louisiana Tech to NMSU.
