As word spreads that Japanese eating sensation Kobayashi might not show for the Nathan's Famous July Fourth Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island because contract negotiations with Major League Eating have broken down, (Yes, we just said "contract negotiations" and "Major League Eating"!) speculation runs rampant as to exactly what might derail one of the greatest sports rivalries of all time.

Takeru Kobayashi and Joey Chestnut.
Kobayashi was the master, winning competitive eating's Super Bowl from 2001 to 2006, before his grasshopper, Chestnut, snatched the hot dog from his hand in 2007 and set a new world record by inhaling 66 hot dogs and buns in just 12 minutes.
Chestnut has never looked back, dominating his, ahem, "sport" like no other.
As for Kobayashi, here's this from the sanctioning organization, Major League Eating. And we're quoting: "In recent weeks, Major League Eating has sought to arrive at an agreement with Kobayashi, but contract negotiations have reached an impasse. MLE remains hopeful that Kobayashi ... will decide to compete this July 4th in Coney Island, when Joey Chestnut will seek his fourth consecutive title."
