Floyd on Rashanti Harris

UTEP head coach Tim Floyd talks about perhaps the cream of his first recruiting crop, Rashanti Harris, a hard-working and defensive-minded 6-8 post player. Harris was rated as a three-star recruit playing for New Hope HS in Mississippi before signing with Georgia State, then not qualifying academically. 

But Floyd maintains that after a season of prep school work that Harris will qualify and be ready to play this fall for UTEP.

Floyd on Haynes

UTEP head men's basketball coach Tim Floyd talks about his first announced signing, 6-6 F Michael Haynes, a three-star recruit (according to Rivals.com) who promises to be a big help to the Miners in the front court. Floyd also talks about recruiting in general and getting a late start on the chase for talent.

Time Warner Cable Sports feature on Tim Floyd follows below, but first Floyd introduces longtime friend and associate Phil Johnson as his top assistant coach. Johnson was an assistant on Floyd's staff with the Chicago Bulls and also won a national championship with Lute Olsen at Arizona. 

Miners fans might remember the time UTEP season ticket holder and haranguer extraordinaire, attorney Phil Ortega, got Johnson -- then the head coach at former WAC foe San Jose State -- to turn and argue with him until both had to be restrained by UTEP security. The two have since passed over those troubled waters and Ortega was at the press conference to do some mugging for the cameras with Johnson at the end.
