So, my original thought was that, when it came to looking for UTEP's next head coach, it would be neither Tim Floyd nor Billy Gillispie -- both widely considered to be the top two targets.
Word was that Bob Marlin, the head coach at Sam Houston State, might also apply. Marlin is a coach who can coach, we heard, but what was not known was how well he could recruit.
Then, word started to trickle down that Tim Floyd would still be the man. We heard this so much, I changed my mind and said I was reasonably sure I wouldn't look ridiculous in doing so.
I was even surer Floyd was the pick after Bob Marlin -- quickly -- accepted the job at Louisiana-Lafayette. Then came word that Gillispie will be named the next head coach at Houston as early as today and I was even more convinced.
But there is that little matter of the alleged payment of $1,000 to Rodney Guillory, who was former USC one-and-done standout O.J. Mayo's "man". Floyd's NCAA status is still in limbo until the NCAA decides if they will accuse or...not.
Floyd maintains his innocence and expects to be cleared, saying the problems that got him to resign at USC had more to do with the athletic director than the NCAA.
But there are new whispers...
New verdict, aligned with my original thought, which maybe I should have kept instead of following other rumors: None of the above.

dickey will get the job
