Steve Kaplowitz broke the news -- looks like UTEP's next head men's basketball coach will be UTEP assistant coach Randall Dickey. Look for an announcement soon.
No telling what may or may not have happened with Tim Floyd, but perhaps they tried to make it work and it just hasn't.
And one thing is obvious until there is an announcement -- it ain't over 'til it's over.

Floyd took too much time to decide??

One of the golden rules is never to the long time loyal assistant. Typical Utep by always thinking small. I wont be renewing my season tix if this happens.

*never to hire

I like Dickey, but I don't think this will put butts in the seats. I know I will be there but I don't know if the rest of the city will. Plus, we know virtually nothing about his coaching ability, and Floyd and Gillispie both are proven coaches.

Can someone please stand up and name someone Dickey was personally responsible for recruiting to UTEP?
Posted by: Caesar | March 29, 2010 at 10:31 AM
They've hired the right person for the job 3 times in a row I think UTEP has proven they're capable of making a good decision when it comes to basketball coaches.
Floyd and Gillespie would be fine but I think they're out of UTEP's price range

on the radio this morning, they credited Dickey with bringing Caracter, Stone, Polk, and a few others here.
Let's give the guy a chance and see how he does. I for one know that I will be in attendance at the UTEP basketball games next season....and I am a Baylor Grad!
Go UTEP!

Dickey was actually key in luring Derrick Caracter to UTEP. DC was recruited by Barbee and therefore familiar with him... but if you ask DC, he'll tell you Coach Dickey was one of the major reasons why he came to El Paso.
And yeah I'd be just a tad disappointed if we didn't get one of the big name coaches out there, but Bob Stull has had success with unknown assistant coaches before. Nobody had heard of Gillispie, Sadler or Barbee before they got hired either and they all won at UTEP. Coach Dickey is loved by the players and might be an attempt to keep this team and the incoming recruiting class together for next year.

Dickey is a great recruiter, especially when it comes to JUCO and Transfer players, but we need a COACH! I'm not saying he's not a good coach, but do we know for sure? We need someone that can take us far without relying on talent alone (BARBEE).

Don't forget that as of today, Floyd is still under NCAA investigation and Gillispie is coming off his 3rd DWI (that we know of) and probably couldn't get hired at UTEP as a staffer, let alone as a head coach.

you want loyalty dickey is the guy> UTEP has made four postseason tournament appearances in five seasons since Randall Dickey joined the staff for the 2004-05 campaign. The Miners have averaged nearly 21 wins per year during that span. UTEP participated in the NCAA Tournament in 2005, the NIT in 2006 and the CBI in 2008 and 2009.

By the way I'm saying Barbee relied on talent. Haha
Posted by: Jake | March 29, 2010 at 10:41 AM
n its obvious also the NCAA tournament in 2010. hes made 5 post season in 6 years
Posted by: javi | March 29, 2010 at 10:43 AM
That's great, but can you say that it was all because of him? No. If he does get hired though he will most likely bring in his brother who has collegiate head coaching experience so thats a plus. I am more worried about getting fans to come to the games, more than anything. With Floyd or Gillespie ticket sales will boom.

Well have to see if this is a good move, there certainly is no wow factor with Dickey. I feel attendance will be very low this upcoming season if he is hired.
Posted by: Caesar | March 29, 2010 at 10:46 AM
thats whats wrong with el paso the coaches who really want to be here you dont support... price, n dickey. but the coaches who hit n quit you want them back doesnt el paso have any pride in themselves give dickey a chance n support him. hes been here 6 yrs going on 7. you keep talking about loyalty this is the guy. if attendance is low thats el paso fault not the coach. we sold out the haskins center against rice n ecu for barbee n he still dump us.
Posted by: javi | March 29, 2010 at 10:59 AM
n da worst part is he didnt have the balls to tell us in our face its over. no we found out cuz we saw him with the other girl (auburn). let billy go to houston with their 2000 fans a game. as for me n family will be at every UTEP game with the other 10000+ fans
Posted by: javi | March 29, 2010 at 11:02 AM
The problem is that people only show up when we are winning, if more showed up every game maybe we would win more games. I'm not a huge fan of the loyalty argument, we were spoiled with Don Haskins. CBB is a business and people will move on. It really comes down to money. If Dickey does well here who says he won't go for bigger bucks? I am not willing to bet on it. The fact of the matter is that unless our Football program starts doing better we will never be able to hand out large salaries for our CBB coaches. Hopefully I am wrong and my comments bite me in the backside.
GO MINERS, no matter who our next coach is. I will be there either way!
Posted by: Jake | March 29, 2010 at 11:08 AM
you got a point jake i still belief that if we would of sold out the haskins center against nmsu, n byu (instead of ppl watching the cowboys) our season could of turned out differently. overall can someone please explain how houston is a better job than UTEP? n how they can afford to pay more? they averaged less than 2000 a game
Posted by: javi | March 29, 2010 at 11:16 AM
Boy, it sure would be nice if some philanthropist like those at USC would come by and drop $1,000 on my lap. This simply does not happen in real life unless there is a bribe at hand. It's going to be really hard for Tim Floyd to distance himself from the $1,000 "gift" to USC player Mayo, somehow claiming that he had no idea this was happening when, in the end, he as coach of that program would be the benificiary. Think it's better to go with Dickey and not Floyd, as we may see here in the next month.
Posted by: Scooby | March 29, 2010 at 11:18 AM
Yeah, if those games would have been better attended we could have beat them. The only reason Houston can pay more is because their football program brings in a lot of revenue. It is not a better job, in my opinion. The only good thing is that Houston is an exciting city. In terms of talent and potential for success, UTEP is the better job.

Well said Javi, Everyone always B**ches and moans about supporting the progam no matter what, and now they're threatening of not supporting the team. All out of towners are right when they say El Paso sucks because they never support the team. I'm sick of people saying they want one thing, but then the other. W.T.F. do you people want??? Barbee effed us over big time and your giving Randall Dickey sh*t???? Get the F**k out of here with that B.S. people. So sick and tired of this town, its no wonder why what little talent El Paso has they bolt for a school like Texas or Texas Tech, I don't blame them. OH BUT WATCH OUT, whenever the Mexican national soccer team or the stupid Dallas Cowboys play all the friggin bars are filled to the brim. When it came to the basketball games, people only went when they started winning, I went to every single game, no matter who the opponent was. Almost makes me ashamed to be a student at UTEP because of all you doosh bags.
P.S. All you old farts can sit on your @$$e$ and b**ch about every little thing, leave the rooting up to us small group of loyal students in the student section to support the team.

Randall Dickey is a proven coach. How many of you have watched a practice. Coach Dickey was the one who did the scouting report on the other team, knew their personnel, and figured ways to beat them. Coach Dickey has been kept on by all the coaches who have come and gone. He is an El Paso man now with family here, who wants to stay here. You are looking for someone who will stay around awhile. Dickey is that man.
I for one, think this is a good choice.
Posted by: 2myeye | March 29, 2010 at 11:26 AM
Miner Niner you are completely correct.
Posted by: Jake | March 29, 2010 at 11:26 AM
Bob Stull just squashed the Rumors and said that a decision had not been made yet, so we'll wait and see what happens.
