UTEP-Marshall Post-Game

The Miners rang out 2009 with a blowout 52-21 win over the bowl-eligible Marshall Thundering Herd. 

Bowl-eligible, but perhaps not bowl-bound after this rout. 

The "Thundering" in Thundering Herd might be war drums along the Ohio. Word is, coach Mark Snyder might be on the outs after his fifth season.

This was certainly not UTEP's concern as a happy locker room celebrated a Senior Day win, the first last game won by the Miners since 1986. 

Though Donald Buckram got hurt and was unable to finish the season with a big day rushing to cement his place in the Miners record book, UTEP junior QB Trevor Vittatoe gladly stepped into that spotlight -- a spotlight many thought would be his by the end of 2009, anyway.

Despite the futility that has been UTEP football through the decades, quarterback has been one spot where the Miners have seen solid play, which makes what Vittatoe did Saturday stand out even more.

Vittatoe's 517 yards passing against the Herd breaks UTEP's single-game record not held by Jordan Palmer, not by either of the Perez boys -- Mike or Rocky -- not by Pat Hegarty, not even by Slingin' Sammy Garza. 

It breaks Bill Craigo's record of 507 passing yards set in 1970.

That record was 39 years old, which is old enough to be obviously old, even in a dark bar.

So, it's on to 2010 with a skip -- not a trip -- in their step...

Too bad they have already announced that Price will be back next year. Miners will never be even a good middle sized program unless the school is willing to step up and buy out the contract of a coach that has obviously lost contact. Truly time for Price to go. Despite all the talent, I see another 5 - 7 team next year at best, and that is without Buffalo and Texas on the schedule.
