UTEP head coach Tony Barbee and players Stefon Jackson and Gabriel McCulley mull the Miners 80-67 loss to the UNLV Runnin' Rebels Monday night. It's the first loss of the season for UTEP, which will head straight to Anaheim for tournament play this weekend. Consistent intensity is what Tony Barbee wants his Miners to have. Price Still Upbeat

Suddenly, UTEP Has A Future

The past, being what it is for UTEP football, usually puts the present on shaky ground. And instability means there's no footing for the future.

So it is nice to notice the unusual -- a two-game winning streak in November that has the Miners on an outcropping near a summit unimagined after the first three games of 2008: bowl eligibility.

Of course, two missed steps against Houston and East Carolina and the fall from so near the top would hurt all the more. But Mike Price and his Miners keep climbing even after recuperating from some serious falls over the last two years.

A 36-10 win over SMU didn't hurt.

Two road games to finish out the regular season -- at Houston and at East Carolina -- won't help.

The UTEP coach talked about both at his weekly press conference.

Could the Miners Go Bowling?

                         Two in a row in November and a chance to play for a third bowl game in Mike Price's five years. Not bad for a team that lost its first three games then let a conference foe put 77 points on its defense. But Price and his Miners continue to plug away. A solid 36-10 win over SMU sure didn't hurt.

After coming all the way back from an 0-3 start, winning their next three, UTEP has regressed and lost their last two games giving up a combined total of 126 points.
