Ayanna Vasquez, 17 and Edmund Guzman, 16 — both from Las Cruces — will compete in the 2012 USA Boxing National Tournament Feb. 27 through March 3 Fort Carson, Colorado.
Vasquez and Guzman are two of 11 boxers representing New Mexico in the tournament.
Vasquez — a nine-time junior national champion — will fight in the women’s open bantam weight division at 119 pounds. Guzman — the New Mexico state junior champion — will fight in the men’s open flyweight division at 114 pounds.
Vasquez and Guzman fight out of the Las Cruces PAL Boxing Club. The coaches for the New Mexico team are Rick Vasquez and Chris Barela who are both coaches at the Las Cruces PAL Boxing Club.
The tournament, which has come to be known as the “reload” is the 2012 USA Boxing National Championships. This event will be the final opportunity for boxers in the seven unqualified weight divisions to attempt to qualify for the Olympics.
The winners of the 2012 USA Boxing National Championships in those seven weight divisions will represent the United States in the final international Olympic Qualifier in May in Brazil.
The 2012 USA Boxing National Championships are not part of the Olympic qualification process for female athletes. The champions in the seven women’s non-Olympic weight divisions will qualify for the 2012Women’s World Championships.
