There are 868 active bowlers 55 years or older participating in adult and senior leagues sanctioned by the El Paso United States Bowling Congress.
This weekend, many of them will be competing in the 31st El Paso USBC 55 Plus Mixed Tournament on Saturday and Sunday at Desert Strike Lanes on Fort Bliss.
Close to 300 bowlers are playing in USBC-sanctioned senior leagues at Fiesta Lanes, Bowl El Paso and Desert Strike Lanes including a pair of 89 year olds - Harold Alexander who bowls at Fiesta Lanes on Thursdays and Betty Barrie who bowls at Desert Strike Lanes on Wednesdays. They both will turn 90 years old in October.
Bowlers between 55 and 89 years old will take over the 52-lane Desert Strike house.
There will be a men's and women's category with five divisions — Super Senior for players 75 years old and over; Class A for players 70 through 74; Class B for players 65 through 69; Class C for players 60 through 64 and Class D for players 55 through 59.
They will be playing for prize money and pride.
The tournament will be at noon and 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Desert Strike Lanes, Building 2949 Carter on Fort Bliss. You will need a driver's license and proof of insurance to get on base and its free to watch so why not?
