The 11th annual edition of the free Alfresco! Fridays series should look and sound familiar, except for one thing.
It has a title sponsor this year.
FirstLight Federal Credit Union (hey, I'm a member!) is footing the bill for this year's concert dance series, which highlights local bands from various genres on Friday evenings in the Arts Festival Plaza, between the Plaza Theatre and El Paso Museum of Art.
After opening a month early in 2010 and 2011, the series returned to its traditional May opening last year, and will do so again, with 19 shows (down from 23 last year) between May 3 and Sept. 27.
There are no shows scheduled for May 24 (Memorial Day weekend), June 28 (Downtown Street Fest) or Aug. 30 (Labor Day weekend), but it will overlap with both weekends of the sixth annual Plaza Classic Festival, which runs Aug. 1-11.
Many of the bands that have played it in the past will return this year, including Fungi Mungle, Magiztral Sonora, Rod Crosby and the Intruders and, of course, Azucar.
Frontera Bugalu, which brings rock 'n' roll attitude to traditional cumbia music, border reggae rockers Radio La Chusma and Latin jazz/funk band Aztec Zodiac add a hip factor.
