We're 16 of 24 awards in. They've done the "In Memoriam" section, intro'd by George Clooney, concluded with a heartfelt rendition of "The Way We Were" by Barbara Streisand, looking the best money can buy at age 70. It was written, of course, by Marvin Hamlisch, who died in 2012.
The big awards are still to come, but "Lincoln" took its first Oscar for the production design by Rick Carter and Jim Erickson.
"Argo" collected its first, which was for William Goldenberg's film editing.
Streisand's performance, classy and understated, followed an earlier beauty by Adele, singing her haunting "Skyfall" theme, using the less-is-more approach, letting the song build slowly until she belted out that one big note, then let it descend into a hush.
Two great singers showing how it's done.
