Bob Marley's birthday was Feb. 6. He would have been 68.
The peace-loving reggae pioneer, who championed the oppressed in his native Jamaica, is honored annually by one of his most visible local disciples, Ernie Tinajero and his border reggae band, Radio La Chusma.
They'll headline their ninth annual Bob Marley Birthday Bash, which starts at 7 p.m. Feb. 9 at Bombardiers, 109 Castellano.
Doors open at 6.
It will feature belly dancers and performances by local acts Birth Defects, Dub Cartel, Bumpstreet Fonanza, Steady Shakedown and Mexklan, with RLC going on at 11:30 p.m.
There will be a raffle, and donations of musical instruments will be accepted for the Play On Music Mentors program.
Admission is $8 for 21 and up, $10 for 18-20, with a $3 discount with the donation of a canned food item.
In other concert news:
• The deadline for DJs who want to enter the first Battle of the Beats, a bi-national competition, have until Feb. 24.
Adam Marshall, one of the organizers behind it, said it's designed to showcase beat makers from around the region.
Prelims will be at 9 p.m. March 15 at the Lowbrow Palace, with 16 head-to-head matches. Judges have not been announced. It's free, $3 for 21 and over.
The finals will be March 29.
About $600 in cash and more will be awarded.

• Argentinian DJ Hernan Cattaneo performs at 9 p.m. Feb. 22 at Nova Luna.
Ticket details have not been announced.
It's one of several upcoming shows presented by El Paso's SMG Events and North Carolina's Donnie Disco Presents, the same folks who put on the Sun City Music Festival.
The Feb. 15 Bingo Players show at Buchanan's is sold out.
They also are bringing James Zabiela to Nova Luna on March 1; Pleasurekraft vs. Format: B, with Jaceo, on March 2 at Buchanan's; and Morgan Page on April 12 to Buchanan's.
• Ellen Wilson, the UTEP music faculty member who's touting new album "Destiny," will give a free concert at 3 p.m. Feb. 10 at the EPCC Transmountain Forum Theatre on Gateway North near TransMountain.
She'll be backed by her band. They also will play Freedom Crossing on Fort Bliss at 8 p.m. March 1.
