Hair wars?
Salon stylists whipping up wild hairdos is nothing new, but it is apparently new around here.
Organizers of the first Battle of the Salons say they're trying to bring a little follicle flair to local culture vultures.
The event will be at 7 p.m. Nov. 17 at Buchanan's Event Center and will feature stylists from Salon de Marie Antoinette, the Stage, Charels Nichols Eastside Barber Shop, the Wild Hair and Bali's Cecila and Roda.
The winning stylist walks away with a cool 1,000 Gs.
"It's the first time in El Paso, but they have them in Chicago, New York and L.A.," copromoter Jessica Bustamante-Soto said, noting the rise in popularity of stylist-themed reality shows like "Shear Genius."
"You take the most talented (stylists), with lots of creativity and the wildest themes and give a show to El Paso," she said of this weekend's event.
She's promoting it with El Paso's I Am DJ, whose Allen Bochmeyer and David Madrid of West Texas Needle Works will DJ the event.
The winner will be picked by a panel of five judges, including El Paso native Robert Josef Jendrzejcyk, who'll cohost the show with Bustamante-Soto.
Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door, on sale at the salons listed above.

Speaking of hair-oriented entertainment, Marie Otero Hair, Makeup and Arts, 1015 N. Florence, will host its annual open house and art market from 2-6 p.m. Nov. 17.
It's free.
It will feature art and handmade crafts from about eight vendors, including a jeweler from Peru and handmade hats.
Live music will be featured outside, with Echoes in the Park among the performers.
