The Plaza Classic Film Festival is over. Time for free movies at McKelligon Canyon Amphitheater.
The El Paso Convention and Visitors Bureau's Movies in the Canyon series returns Aug. 17 with "Transformers" at 8:30, followed by "Hitch" at 8:30 p.m. Aug. 18.
The series will run Fridays and Saturdays through Oct. 20.
The observant among you will notice that organizers have pushed back the starting time and cut back from two movies to one per night.
Also scheduled: "Big Miracle" (Aug. 24); "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" (Aug. 25); "Puss in Boots" (Aug. 31); "The Adventures of Tintin" (Sept. 1); the return of "Nacho Libre" (Sept. 7); "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial" (Sept. 8); "Captain America: The First Avenger" (Sept. 14); "Iron Man" (Sept. 15); "Despicable Me" (Sept. 21); "The Dark Knight" (Sept. 22); "Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas" (Sept. 28); "Spider-Man" (Sept. 29); "Zookeeper" (Oct. 5); "Thor" (Oct. 6); "Happy Feet Two" (Oct. 12); "True Grit" (Oct. 13); "Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil" (Oct. 19); and "Kung Fu Panda 2" (Oct. 20).
In other movie news, Las Cruces native Aimee Michele Schaefer, a graduate film student at New York University, and Miguel R. Silva, a student in NMSU's Creative Media Institute, will screen four of their projects at 7 p.m. Aug. 18 at Cruces' Rio Grande Theatre.
Dubbed "Blood, Sweat and Tears," it will feature four of her short films, his feature-length documentary and a Q&A with the filmmakers.
Schaefer will show "Gemini," shot in New York on 16mm film and accepted into the Cannes Film Festival Shorts Tent, "Prehistory," a locally shot documentary on Mesilla character Sonny, a new film noir short called "The Matinee" and "Gone," her 20-minute thesis project for the Media Arts Program at the University of New Mexico.
She produced and Silva directed "Soul in the Sun," a music documentary by students from CMI and the film program at Dona Ana Community College.
Tickets are $15, $10 for seniors and students with ID, on sale at Lulu's, Spirit Winds and the Mountain View Market Coop in LC, and at the door.
