A flurry of concert news this morning, all of it involving the Coliseum.
Let's get right to it.
Recently self-outed Latin pop superstar Ricky Martin will bring his "M.A.S." tour to El Paso's County Coliseum on April 28.
It's his first tour in more than three years and comes on the heels of his announcement that he is gay. Martin is promoting his new autobiography, "Me," and the forthcoming "Musica + Alma + Sexo" album, his first studio album in six years.
It comes out Feb. 1, the same day he'll perform first single "The Best Thing About Me Is You" (the Spanish version is "Lo Mejor de Mi Vida Eres Tu") on NBC's "Today" show.
Coliseum officials don't have ticket prices or an on-sale date yet, but since the tour was announced today, you can bet they'll go on sale soon, maybe in the next two weeks.
Meanwhile, Trans-Siberian Orchestra will be returning to the area, but not with its popular Christmas show. The rock 'n' roll orchestra is bringing its "Beethoven's Last Night" tour to the Coliseum at 7:30 p.m. May 5.
Tickets are $34.50, $44.50 and $54.50, plus service charges, on sale at 10 a.m. March 5 at the box office and Ticketmaster.
And metal fans won't be left out. The first annual Avalanche tour — with Stone Sour, Theory of a Deadman, Skillet, Halestorm and Art of Dying — comes to the Coliseum on April 17.
Most dates are going on sale Feb. 5. A presale starts Feb. 1 on avalanchetour.com. No ticket prices announced yet.
In related news, Detroit rock legend Bob Seger announced today he's going back out on the road in March, his first tour in 2006 (and that was believed to be his last). I don't want to get anybody's hopes up too high, but I've heard there could, stress could, be a local date. We'll see.

Don't tease me with Bob Seger...

How many people did Slash pull in to Speaking Rock the other night? Was it a success from a ticket-sale standpoint?

Ricky Martin is more metal than any of the bands on that Avalanche tour.

I Attended the Slash concert an hour into the show. The building was filled to capacity. I had to watch the show outside. Peeking inside the "free show" was obstructed by a black curtain and rude security.
With all the guarantees Speaking Rock is paying they should invest in a better staging area.

I don't mean to tease, I've just been asking around (and asking his people to bring him here).
As for Slash, it was a free, not ticketed show. Estimates I got were around 5,000-6,000, including outdoor overflow. The club's capacity is 5,000. But I'm re-checking on that.
Someone on another post asked about ?uestlove. Promoter Joe Nava says he had about 350 people at the Reyn Theatre. Joe had hoped for more, but said Quest DJ'd until about 3 a.m. and did "a history of hip-hop," which I would have loved to have heard. Joe says he's hoping to bring him back in the fall on a weekend.
And he's got the Smiths' Andy Rourke doing a DJ set March 10 at the Garden, ticket info to come.

Doug, keep up the good work. I was at the Slash concert and 5k is way overstated. There is no way that place holds 5,000. I would say 2,000. tops.
Hats off to Speaking Rock for finally bringing shows to the area.......but how do they make money on these shows? Alcohol and slot machines? I would think a big act like STP would cost a fortune to get them to show up. Glad Social D is coming back. Thanks

Thanks for keeping us updated on all types of music. Some journalists just cater to one style but you do it all. Kudos!
The Talib Kweli DJ set in December at The Garden was epic.

No cover, $5 for 1 budlight bottle for slash, you do the math.

As far I’m concerned, and certainly many share the same idea; I don’t care if Ricky Martin is gay or straight or whatever, but what interests me much is his music which is very touching and fabulous. I don’t judge people for their choices, but from what they’re doing and Ricky sucks! GO Ricky, we’ll be always behind u!
