New UTEP head football coach Sean Kugler is going local.
Kugler has offered a scholarship to Burges High senior Alvin Jones, whose transition to quarterback helped the Mustangs reach the third round of the playoffs for the first time in school history. Jones, however, likely projects as a defensive back in college.
Jones also is of course the twin brother of star Aaron Jones, the 2012 El Paso Times’ All-City MVP. Aaron Jones is on record as saying he would like to attend college and play with his brother.
Aaron Jones, who is being recruited by UNM, NMSU, UCLA, Boise State, UTSA and others, has been one of UTEP’s primary targets.
Alvin Jones struggled with injuries as a sophomore and junior, emerging as a Division I recruit in basketball with an offer from the University of New Orleans. But he burst onto the scene this year, playing both quarterback and safety. He had multiple 100-yard rushing games in the playoffs and finished with 74 tackles.
