Faith Christian Academy basketball star Ray Barreno has verbally committed to Tulane University.
The 6-10, 215-pound senior center chose the Green Wave earlier this week, over a myriad of other offers that included Texas State, UT-Arlington, Tulsa, Colorado State and Fresno State. Barreno had interest from Texas Tech, Kansas State and UTEP, but did receive offers from those schools.
Barreno’s commitment is non-binding. The first signing period begins in the second week of November.
Barreno opted for Tulane after a visit last weekend. He cited the school’s academics, location and facilities for his choice. The Green Wave also showed considerable interest, visiting him three or four times, and being in Conference USA also helped with yearly trips to El Paso.
Barreno helped Faith Christian to a TCAL state championship last year. He averaged 11.4 points a game, 9.4 rebounds and 1.1 blocks.
The 2012 All-City selection, a three-star recruit according to Rivals.com, possesses a lot of potential. He has a great outside shot, good defensive instincts and his length will play well in college. But he’ll need to get stronger and develop a stronger post presence, especially since he did not start playing basketball until 7th grade.
