This Friday's El Dorado vs. Montwood District 1-5A football showdown at the Socorro Student Activities Complex has all the makings of another exciting game between the two teams. Last year, Montwood edged El Dorado 35-34 on its way to a share of the District 1-5A title.
This year, El Dorado is 2-2 overall and 1-0 in district but could easily be 4-0 after close losses to Frenship and Mayfield. LeDerrick Wilson, arguably the city's top running back, has been great all year with nearly 800 yards rushing and 12 TDs. He'll be priority No. 1 for the Montwood defense. But I've been impressed with El Dorado's defense this year. The team has been more aggressive and has good speed. Linebacker Trevor Rios and DL Sebastian Ortiz are among the leaders.
Montwood is well Montwood. The Rams, who are 3-1 overall and 1-0 in district, have improved defensively this year led by DL Jorge Rodriguez and LB Garret Senne. The offense has been productive led by QB Jacob Aguilar and WR Ruben Portillo. The Rams have close wins over Odessa Permian and Canutillo in which their defense came up with big plays to secure victories.
The Rams are well coached like usual. It'll be interesting to see if their off week helped them find a little more consistency on offense. The Rams seemed a little up and down offensively early in the season but they still have plenty of weapons and have made key plays when they have had to.
