There weren't many surprises at the district swim meets this weekend at the SAC. But there were plenty of big time performances.
Eastwood won its 31st district title on Saturday. Joe Brown, who is headed to Louisville, was a standout in the 200-yard IM (1:53.40) and 100-yard butterfly (50.31). Both his times will be All-American consideration. But his teammates were also very good, especially Leonardo Sanchez (200-yard freestyle) and Manny Griego (500-yard freestyle).
Hanks showed its dominance in District 2-4A, winning both the boys and girls meets. Coach Jeff Ellsworth has done a nice job getting his team to a top level.
The El Paso boys and girls were very good this weekend in winning the boys and girls events. Shanny Lin and Danielle Gonzalez shined brightly for the girls team, while Hugo Gallegos, Victor Bac and Andrew Harmon were among the standouts for the boys.
And last but not least, the Franklin girls won the 1-5A girls title on Friday. Sophomore standouts Nina Gonzalez and Sammi Wilts helped lead a strong Cougars squad this year. Regionals are in two weeks and don't be surprised to see a strong contingent of El Paso swimmers going to state.
