Franklin season may not be over

The Franklin High football team's season may not be over just yet.

After falling to Arlington Bowie 31-14 in the Class 5a Division 1 playoffs, El Paso Independent School District Athletic Director Ken Owen received a call from the University Interscholastic League to keep the Cougars practicing. Owen did not know the reason but said Bowie is under investigation for some type of player waiver.

If Bowie used any kind of ineligible player the Volunteers would forfeit the game. A decision by the UIL is expected Monday.

UIL states in DFW area that the player was elgibale during reg season, and now recants that "the player may be un-elgibale!" This was an UIL mistake, saying they did not find the proper forms for the move in into the school! If so, then the players & coaches should not be punished! UIL should stand up and take the blame!! NO CHEATING GOING ON, just a HUGE MISTAKE FROM THE UIL!!!!! Good luck either way it goes!!

Arlington ISD athletic director O.J. Kemp said she was contacted by the league on Nov. 20 regarding the matter.

If the UIL allows Bowie to have a waiver approved retroactively, no action would need to be taken. If not, Franklin could be advanced.

Arlington Bowie’s playoff path will be left in its own hands.

The University Interscholastic League has informed Bowie that it will be able to advance to the 5A Division I regional round to face DeSoto – 2 p.m. Saturday at Bedford’s Pennington Field.
