The Chapin football team scrimmaged Mayfield on Friday night in advance of the season opener next week against Las Cruces High.
Chapin, which won 9 games last year, looked good on offense led by QB Seth Gonzales, WR Jaylan Addison and a strong offensive line. Looks like the Huskies will be a strong contender to repeat as District 1-4A champions this year. Chapin has to clean some things on defense, but overall not a bad showing.
Mayfield, which faces El Dorado next week here in El Paso and Franklin a week later, showed some flashes on offense, including a long TD pass. But Mayfield will need to improve defensively if it wants to make its annual run to the New Mexico Class 5A state title game.
