While the Chapin girls basketball team has garnered many of the headlines around the city for its perfect ranking and top 10 state ranking, the Horizon girls basketball team has quietly had a very good nice season so far.
The Scorpions are 19-2 on the year under first year coach Arturo Escobar, nearly upset Chapin last week at the Riverside Tournament and have if not the best backcourt in the city, then certainly one of the top backcourts in the city.
Guards Janelle Perez and Leslie Caballero lead the team in scoring and have come up big all season long for the team, whose only two losses are to Chapin this season.
Perez is the team's best player and she's garnering attention from Barton Junior College in Kansas, New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs and UT-Permian Basin.
Good teams with good guard play always have a chance to do well in postseason and with Perez and Caballero, the Scorpions are far and away the favorites to win District 2-4A and should have a legitimate chance to win a few games in the postseason.
