Impressed fan I am impressed that you remembered. Lets not forget the family tradition at Bel Air going back to the 70's when Coach Romero and Coach "Maz" were there and Bel Air would win all divisions in cross country. Runners like Maria Barrios, Lety Gomez, Angel Baeza, Trevizo, Sergio Oaxaca, Ruben Garcia, Frank Arriola, Frank Arredondo. On the subject of Ben Muniz. He happen to qualify for the Pan American Games his senior year in high school. He was a runner in at Clovis High School in California before returning to El Paso to win a district championship with a 1:55.75 in the 800. His son is Ben Muniz III who ran at Eastwood High School and now is Naval Officer serving in Iraq. Steven Muniz happens to be his nephew and Javier Muniz, who also ran at Bel Air, is Ben Muniz's brother. Javier ran 4:14 in the mile as a sophomore and a 1:53 i the 800. Brother Ben coached Javier to a national championship in 1985 before he entered high school. The whole family runs including Richard Pacheco who I ran with in high school at Bel Air. I hope to see El Paso's Finest do well at their perspective regional meets El Paso wins when El Paso's runners do well. Good Luck all runners. Next week should be good at the Meet of Champions with seven runners under 2 minutes including Irvin's Castanon and Bel Air's Muniz at 1:56, two Austin runners at 1:57, Coronado's Taylor at 1:57, Franklin's Christian at 1:58 and Ysleta's Diaz at 1:59. If weather permits, this has the ingredients for a fast 800 where all runners can post fast times before heading for regionals.

Is it me or have the baseball posts recently declined into a sad abyss of murky Rio Grande water? Where are the up to date PodCasts?? Where are the articles?? Do we not have a few local baseball teams with a chance to do what the DEL VALLE just recentely accomplished in soccer??
Granted each of these teams are facing uphill battles and numerous challenges...but alas they are all strong representatives of our city... You have the Mighty Bulldogs...I'm sure that they are still a top three State Ranked Team and should make a serious run. Couple them with a resiliant and battle tested Franklin squad & a speedy yet exciting Montwood unit and you have 3 teams in 5A that could make some noise. Shuttle over to 4A and a well balanced Riverside machine is primed to make a hard drive to bring home the State Prize, and last but not least a very unknown but very impressive and explosive Cathedral unit that looks to be State Championship primed. (Yes I know its not a UIL format..but its still a difficult task for any level)
Where is the love for what could be an exciting playoff run for all of these elite programs????
I guess we will have to wait til track is over....or better yet...July..lets go guys...get with it, BASEBALL along with SOCCER ARE EL PASO'S TRUE SPORTS!!!

Beau and John, its time you two start talking about the upcoming Softball season. I see Chapin HS is ranked preseason #3 in the city. I really see them dominating again this year and doing so with the possibility of having 3 Freshman starting. Although they lost 2 top quality pitchers from last year, they may have gained 2 new pitchers that could possibly put them over the top. It should be an exciting season with them playing #5 ranked BelAir on Tuesday. Go Huskies!!!
