Tim Floyd: behind the scenes extra

New UTEP head basketball coach Tim Floyd posed for a photo shoot for the El Paso Times in the Don Haskins Center Wednesday, April 28. Floyd. 56, walked into a familiar arena - formerly known as the Special Events Center when he served as an assistant coach there under legendary coach Don Haskins from 1978 to 1986. He was named head coach of the Miners March 30.

Antonio Escalante will take on Carlos Ricardo Rodriguez of Argentina May 7 in the Don Haskins Center on ESPN2's Friday Night Fights. Escalante, 23-2 (14 knockouts), has moved up to featherweight and is now ranked No. 3 in the world by the WBC. Rodriguez is 22-3 (12).

"I'm loving it," said Escalante of fighting in his own backyard. "The real advantage for me is the energy I draw from the El Paso fight fans. I'm convinced we have the loudest and the best fight fans in the world. It's a great feeling knowing they will be cheering me on when I walk into the ring. There's really no better place to fight for me."
