Doggone good action

The Miners had an unexpected visitor to Saturday's first day of workouts at Camp Socorro. A four-footed fan enjoyed a few plays before its owner came to take  it off the field. The action was plentiful as the team went through spirited drills. (Bottom photo) Defensive back Derick Morgan, top, leaped over receiver Davian Harper as they battled for a pass which fell incomplete Saturday.

Original post: Perhaps no conference in the country has more parity, perhaps no conference is more wide open than the Conference USA Men's Basketball Tournament. The starter's gun fires this morning when East Carolina, 16-14, and UCF, 19-10, meet at 11 a.m. in the Don Haskins Center.

It is one of four games today -- followed by Southern Miss (21-9) against Tulane (13-16) at 1:30 p.m. The evening session features Marshall (21-10) vs. Houston (12-17) at 5:30 p.m., then SMU (17-13) against Rice (13-17) at 8 p.m.

Playoff Action

The final score may have been lopsided with Bowie defeating Ysleta 71-29 in their playoff game Tuesday Feb. 22, but the action was still intense with players from both teams scrambling and hustling for loose balls and making great plays. In top photo,  Bowie's James Puga, bottom, and Sergio Diaz, top, fought Ysleta's Brandon Aguirre for a loose ball during the second quarter. In bottom photo, Bowie's Juan Medrano, bottom, passed the ball while on his back to start a fastbreak as he and Ysleta's Brandon Aguirre fought for control during the second quarter.



 

 

Notre Dame celebrates

The Notre Dame faithful had plenty to cheer about Friday as the Fighting Irish ruled the 77th annual Hyundai Sun Bowl game. Notre Dame defeated Miami 33-17 before a record 54,021 fans. (Photo below) Irish head coach Brian Kelly, left, happily accepted the championship trophy from Sun Bowl Executive Director Bernie Olivas, right, and Oscar Leeser of Hyundai.

         
Irish faithful, including Destinee Fagundes, top left, cheered the Irish, including the school mascot. Fans like those below were decked out in their Irish best to support their team.

Sun Bowl action

Hyundai Sun Bowl C.M. Hendricks Most Valuable Player Michael Floyd of Notre Dame almost pulled in a one-handed reception in the end zone Friday. The pass was one of the few that got away. Floyd scored the game's first two touchdowns and caught six passes for 109 yards.

Honoring the past while beginning anew

The Tim Floyd era officially began at UTEP on Friday Nov. 12 when the Miners kicked off their season against Pacific in front of a cheering, sell-out crowd. Prior to the game, Mary Haskins, widow of longtime head coach Don Haskins, was honored with an autographed Texas Western jersey. To cap off the ceremony, coach  Floyd, who was an assistant under Haskins, emulated his mentor by taking off a clip-on tie as Haskins would do prior to the start of a contest. Mary Haskins, accompanied by UTEP President Diana Natalicio reacted gleefully to the effort.
                          

                        

Tough racing

Participants in the District 1-4A boys cross country championship raced beneath the morning sun at the Chamizal National Memorial park Saturday Oct. 30. The hotly contested race was won by Austin's Isaac Spencer, shown here in second place. He was able to outsprint Jeff's Joe Flores to the finish line.

Checking the 'do

UTEP freshman and Irvin graduate Kayla Thornon seemed amused by assistant coach Bill Damuth's new 'do during media day Wednesday Oct. 13 at the Foster Stevens practice facility. Teammate Erika Warren watched Thornton. Kayla, Erika and their teammates enjoyed the light-hearted moment before hitting the practice floor to continue preparations for their Nov. 7 season opener against St. Mary's at the Haskins Center.

Serve it up

Bernardo Escoto eyes his serve during a game at the El Paso Table Tennis Club Tuesday Oct. 5. Escoto is a member of the El Paso Table Tennis club organization. Members, who range in age from 6 to 84 and are at various playing levels,  meet at the club located at 2727 Wyoming to compete and to receive instruction about playing the game.
       

Ooooh, so close

Franklin High School golfer Alex de Lyon reacts as his chip shot from about 40 feet rolled inches short of the cup during the final round of action in the Matt Hicks Paso Del Nore High School Boys Golf Tournament at the Santa Teresa Country club. De Lyon shot 148 for the two days to win the individual title. Lubbock Coronado won the team title.
