Children and Santa

The famous Macy's Department Store Santa visited with  children at Fort Bliss recently. Each child had his or her way of reacting to the jolly man. Julia Maple, 4, top photo, seemed mesmerized as she conversed with Santa. Chloie Williams, 2, second row left, wanted no part of the visit while Maria Collazo, 3, gave Santa a big hug. Final, Jordan Bailey, bottom right,hid her face from Santa as she, sister Payton, 1, and mom Terry Bailey had their picture taken with Santa. She just wanted the visit to be over.

Doggone good action

The Miners had an unexpected visitor to Saturday's first day of workouts at Camp Socorro. A four-footed fan enjoyed a few plays before its owner came to take  it off the field. The action was plentiful as the team went through spirited drills. (Bottom photo) Defensive back Derick Morgan, top, leaped over receiver Davian Harper as they battled for a pass which fell incomplete Saturday.


                              

Can I Get a Witness?

Jose Luis Escobar took down a name and phone number from a driver at Bartlett and Le Conte Wednesday morning. Escobar, 58, said he was arrested for jaywalking and taken to jail by a police oficer who was conducting speed enforcement on Bartlett at last Friday. He held a sign Wednesday asking people who saw him jogging last Friday to stop. The jogger believes the officer arrested him as retaliation for warning motorists about the officer's presence. So far Escobar has collected the names and numbers of 8 drivers. Rudy Gutierrez/El Paso Times

Whoa!!

County Judge Veronica Escobar convened a sometimes testy session and in the end she conceded that some of the department's problems might be due to a lack of resources - a shortcoming she offered to help remedy. "Lets not let this happen Again"

Pat Montes mother of Eastwood student Jonathon Cervoni along with Margaret, Ashley and Fred Carrillo parents and sister of Montwood student Aaron Carrillo stand in a moment of silence for their sons and brother at a memorial service held in honor of the two students that were killed last week by a druken driver. The memorial was held at Montwood High School with about 400 family and friends attending the service for the two students.

TAKS pep rally

As a final preparation for the writing portion of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, MacArthur fourth and seventh-grade students attended a pep rally Monday Feb. 28 in the school's gymnasium. Students cheered, danced and listened to UTEP assistant basketball coach Greg Foster who gave them tips to be ready for the next day's TAKS. Playoff Action

The final score may have been lopsided with Bowie defeating Ysleta 71-29 in their playoff game Tuesday Feb. 22, but the action was still intense with players from both teams scrambling and hustling for loose balls and making great plays. In top photo,  Bowie's James Puga, bottom, and Sergio Diaz, top, fought Ysleta's Brandon Aguirre for a loose ball during the second quarter. In bottom photo, Bowie's Juan Medrano, bottom, passed the ball while on his back to start a fastbreak as he and Ysleta's Brandon Aguirre fought for control during the second quarter.



 

 

Martin Luther King, Jr. Observance at McCall Center

The McCall Neighborhood Center held a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration Monday at the center located at 3231 Wyoming. King was remembered as a key figure to led the advancement of civil rights for all Americans and especially African Americans through non-violent methods. The event featured evangelist Mary Williams-Ewers, right, reciting poetry, then reading Reverend King's "I Have a Dream" speech. Participants joined in singing and in contributing their own reflections on Reverend King and the civil rights movement. Notre Dame celebrates

The Notre Dame faithful had plenty to cheer about Friday as the Fighting Irish ruled the 77th annual Hyundai Sun Bowl game. Notre Dame defeated Miami 33-17 before a record 54,021 fans. Irish faithful, including Destinee Fagundes, top left, cheered the Irish, including the school mascot. Fans like those below were decked out in their Irish best to support their team.
