Eagle in the Sun triathlete Luis Ruiz, foreground left, was encouraged by (from right) nephew Diego Garcia, niece Tanya Garcia and sister Lilly Ruiz as he left the bicycle portion of Sunday's triathlon. About 620 athletes tested their endurance in the third annual event. Competitors did a 400-yard swim, 20-kilometer bike ride and a 5-K run to finish the grueling event known as a sprint triathlon. Bobby Gonzales of El Paso won the overall men's title at 53 minutes, 15.5 seconds and Kim Carlsen of Las Cruces won the women's top prize at 1 hour, 7 minutes 4.5 seconds.
Hundreds of runners from schools around the El Paso area competed in the Del Valle/Hanks Invitational, the first cross country meet of the new school year. Eastwood won both the boys team and girls team titles. Ryan Saenz of Eastwood took first individually and Socorro's Jocelyn Caro won the girls individual title. St. Anthony's Seminary held its 49th annual bazaar over the Labor Day weekend. The event is a fundraiser for the Franciscan seminary.
