In the swim

Olympians have nothing on El Paso young swimmers when it comes to intensity. Their fire was very evident as the city of El Paso Parks and Recreation Department held its Private Pool Leagues Swimming Championships last weekend. El Paso Country Club took top honors by amassing 1,441.5 points. They outdistanced 10 other teams. Baseball difference of opinion

El Paso coach Carlos Lezcano vehemently voiced his displeasure of a called strike to home plate umpire Sheldon Wheeler during the Diablos' game against Lincoln Saturday. Lezcano believed the proper call was ball four allowing the runner to advance to first and keeping a ninth inning rally going. Lezcano was thrown out of the game, the disputing of balls and strikes is not allowed, but the hitter walked on the next pitch.  Perhaps the fiery argument inspired the team because they came back from a five-run deficit to win 9-8.   (Photo by Alan Calzada, age 12)

Varied leanings

Sun City Women's Golf Championship participants Amber Herrera, top photo, and Laura Barron, bottom photo, used body language with hopes of helping their putts into the hole during the final round of their tournament Friday. In both cases, the ball wound up an inch or two short of the cup. Amber finished second to Laura in the tournament.
                          

                      

Hard landing

Brandon Moss landed after jumping 46-feet 1-inch to take second place in the triple jump competition in Sunday's USATF Region 10 Junior Olympics. Sunday was the final day of the competition, which started Thursday. The the top-five finishers in each event in all age groups (5-18) at the meet-which consisted of athletes from West Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado- qualified for nationals at Morgan State University in Baltimore on July 23-29.
       

Tire round up

More than 6,000 old tires were collected July 7 at the El Paso County Water District's Clint yard during the "Tire Amnesty Program" offered by the El Paso County Water Improvement District no. 1, The Lower Valley water District and the towns of Clint and Horizon City. THe free disposal was offered because of the widespread and persistent problem of old tires being dumped throughout the county. Those tires constituted an eyesore and a health hazard for citizens. A company in Canutillo, Texas will shred some of the tires and some will be sent to Chihuahua, Mexico to be used in cement plants. (Top photo at left) A long line of trucks waited to drop off old tires. (Top photo at right) A worker stood atop a pile of tires he was loading into a trailer. (Bottom photo) Workers filled an 18-wheeler tractor with hundreds of tires to be disposed of properly. Several of these trailers were filled. Another collection will take place July 28 in Clint.
