Republican Bratton starts day in the speaker's chair
State Rep. Don Bratton, the leader of minority Republicans, was in the speaker's chair this morning.
Call it a professional courtesy from House Speaker Ken Martinez, D-Grants.
U.S. Rep. Steve Pearce of Hobbs will speak to the Legislature this morning. Bratton, also of Hobbs, got the chance to lead the chamber before his hometown congressman's speech.
Pearce said Bratton, right, lives across the street from him.
A Republican presiding was an uncommon occurrence in modern times.
Republicans last controlled the New Mexico House of Representatives in 1953-54.
