Ron Griggs succeeds Vernon Asbill, who moved and resigned
Gov. Susana Martinez on Tuesday appointed Griggs, a Republican, to the District 34 seat. The former senator was Vernon Asbill of Carlsbad, who said he resigned because he moved to Artesia, which is outside the district. Asbill, a two-term senator, did not seek re-election.
Griggs, 60, is the former mayor of Alamogordo and former owner of Alamogordo Title Co.
Voters last month elected Griggs to the Senate for a four-year term starting on Jan. 1.
He becomes the second freshman Republican to take office early.
Martinez previously appointed Pat Woods of Broadview to the Senate. He also won his election, then office early when 10-year senator Clint Harden resigned.
