State Rep. McMillan, challenger Ferrary remain deadlocked
The state's closest election may yet come down to a coin flip or rock, paper, scissiors.
A canvass completed Friday in Dona Ana County showed that the race between state Rep. Terry McMillan, R-Las Cruces, and his challenger, Democrat Joanne J. Ferrary, is all tied up.
Each candidate has 6,247 votes.
Next comes an automatic recount that will recheck the accuracy of the totals and determine a winner -- unless they are still tied.
If they are, something as unsatisfying as a coin toss will determine who goes to the state House of Representatives next year from District 37.
If McMillan, above, wins, Democrats would control the House 38-32. A victory for Ferrary would increase the Democrats' margin to 39-31.
Lynn Ellins, the Dona Ana County clerk, had never seen a tie vote until this one.
