Can his star power help GOP Senate candidate down the stretch?
Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida will campaign Wednesday for Heather Wilson, the GOP candidate in New Mexico's contested Senate race.
Gov. Susana Martinez also will stump for Wilson, who is trailing Democrat Martin Heinrich in the polls.
Wilson's camp said in a statement that Rubio and Martinez will join Wilson at an early-voting rally at Tiguex Park in Albuquerque. The event is scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday.
A rally in Las Cruces also was announced by Wilson's spokesman, but no specifics have been provided.
What can Rubio and Martinez say to bolster Wilson's cause?
They will "make their case to voters that Heather Wilson is the only U.S. Senate candidate who will turn around the economy and create jobs," Wilson's statement said.
This would appear to be a change from normal expectations by the GOP.
Most times, Republicans say that government should not and does not create jobs. Rather, government has a role of fostering a climate in which businesspeople create jobs.
Rubio is the fourth Republican senator who will travel to New Mexico on Wilson's behalf.
Sens. John McCain of Arizona, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire arrived as a team to campaign for Wilson last month.
