Las Cruces, New Mexico- The UTEP men’s and women’s cross-country squad had a solid showing at the Kachina Classic. The UTEP men’s team was led once again by Anthony Rotich and Joan Jepkirui paced the women’s team.
The men’s team took four of the top six spots in the meet. Anthony Rotich won his third-consecutive race and finished the 5K in 14:59.92. Sophomore Cosmas Boit turned in another solid outing, as he finished in second place with a time of 15:29.30. Elphas Maiyo(5th) and Daniel Cheruiyot(6th) both finished under the 16 minute mark as well. Ramon Garcia rounded out the Miners performance with a 32nd-place finish.
The men took home the team title with an average 5K of 15:45.57. UTEP defeated El Paso CC and New Mexico State. This is the third consecutive meet that Miners have won.
Freshman Joan Jepkirui continued her fabulous freshman year. She took home her first individual title of her career with a time of 18:32.80. Truphena Sum claimed another top-10 finish as she came in sixth-place with a time of 19:59.03.
Senior Laura Delgado finished in 20th place with a time of 21:54.19. Veronica Alvarez clocked in a time of 22:25.60, which was good enough for 23rd place. Lilliana Valdespino competed in her first race of her career Saturday. The freshman finished the 5K in 25:07.23.
“Both teams showed some good improvement, but we still need to work hard to get everyone close together,” head coach Paul Ereng said.
The Miners will now prepare for their only home meet of the 2014 campaign. The Lori Fitzgerald Classic will take place next Saturday at Chamizal National Park. UTEP will be competing against New Mexico State.
