UTEP’s Gloria Brown is a first-team All-Conference USA and an all-defensive squad selection while Irvin graduate Kayla Thornton is a second-team selection, the league office announced Sunday.
Brown, a second-team pick a year ago, joins former star Jareica Hughes as the only Miners in program history to earn both first team and all-defensive team honors in the same season. The league-champion Miners placed multiple players on the team for the second time. The last time UTEP won the league crown in 2007-08, three players (Hughes, Natasha Lacy & Izabela Piekarska) made the team.
The senior Brown leads the league in blocks at 2.9 per game and averages 11.5 points and 8.8 rebounds per game off the bench. The sophomore Thornton averages 9.8 points and 7.1 rebounds for UTEP, which will open the C-USA tournament Thursday against either UCF or Southern Miss at 5 p.m.
The all-conference team was voted on by coaches, sports information directors and selected media. Specialty honors will be announced today, when Brown is a favorite to win sixth-player of the year honors.
