According to a column in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram , Conference USA and the Mountain West are in talks to create what would amount to a BCS play-in game between conference champions, with the winner getting an automatic bid to one of the five lucrative bowls.
This would, of course, require NCAA approval, both for the automatic bid and for the C-USA champion to get a 14th regular season game. Another option would be for C-USA to eliminate its title game, as its a rematch half the time anyway.
Obviously this would be a boon for both conferences if it happens.
"That would be really attractive," UTEP athletic director Bob Stull said. "Probably more attractive than a conference championship game."
There would also be scheduling agreements between the two conferences for many sports, though UTEP already has a heavy Mountain West presence on its athletic schedules, including an endless series of home-and-homes with Nevada in rifle.
